Long Johns are our favorite wetsuits for sailing because they are such an incredibly versatile and user friendly suit. Farmer John Wetsuits are great for keeping your core warm while delivering complete freedom of motion to do whatever it is you want to do.
– Johns are really easy to put on and take off with their front zip entry, slightly flared ankles and large arm and neck openings which also allow unencumbered mobility and prevent chafing around the neck and arm pits.
– Long Johns are also great for layering. They can be worn alone on a warm day as they have great ventilation while still providing some knee, butt and shin coverage and protection. Then for the next layer you can add any sort of shirt like a lycra or thermal rash guard or a neoprene top to add some more sun protection and or insulation. The next step is to add a windbreaker over the top to take you into the 50’s. If you are sailing in colder weather than that you should be looking into a drysuit.
Stohlquist Rapid vs. Storm
The main differences between the Stohlquist Rapid and Storm Long Johns is in the materials and the seam construction.
– The Rapid here utilizes a more flexible neoprene which is very soft and comfortable.
– The Rapid John also has has glued and blind-stitched seams vs the flat-lock seams on the Storm. Glued and blind-stitched seams have a much better seal than flat-lock seams, so the Rapid John will keep water out better and will therefore be a bit warmer.
Basically if you plan on spending a lot of time in your suit and or you would like to be able to wear it into slightly cooler weather, the Rapid John has a few of those added features that make it a really great suit you will want to use whenever possible.
