Boogie Surfing & Riverboarding TricksBOOGIE SURFING: Big holes are a fun place to surf. Some rivers also have sections of great surfing waves, which break back just right for long periods of surfing. To surf these waves, the easiest way is to enter the hole from the side. This puts you in position to make a 90 degree turn back upriver with your board (though you can also enter it straight and execute a quick 180 degree turn). Once you begin to turn, kick hard into the belly of the wave and keep the front of your board out of the water. Your weight distribution will determine how long you ride the wave for. If you’ve ever boogie boarded in the ocean, this should come as second nature to you – and you can have an endless ride on some of these waves! DUCK DIVE: Some boarders enjoy riding underwater - this trick is for them. Doing this trick is difficult unless the flow of the rapid allows it (usually at the end of a rapid, in a deep, dark green area works best). Simply aim your board toward the bottom of the river and follow it down, letting the current push/pull you down with it. You will pop up quite a ways downstream after a cool, dark, weightless ride! BELLY SPIN: (aka 360) find a glassy wave with a breaking shoulder. as you are surfing the wave, drop back by letting your legs down. this will bring you to the top of the wave. kick hard a couple of times untill you are going forward into the glass. pull up your legs to 90 degrees. as you turn into the wave (glass) rotate your head and thrust your lower body. this will start to spin you. at fist you will rotate 180 degrees and get flushed out the back of the wave. keep trying and you'll come all the way around. EL ROLLO: (aka el rollo) Basically a barrel roll on the wave. helps to be going forward. hold onto the bord as you drop the wave. flop onto your back and try to bring it all the way around. kick hard to re enter the wave DROP KNEE: as you are surfing pull yourself up to your knees. then raise up to one foot and one knee (the foot you are standing on would be your front foot if you were skateboarding or snowboarding).
