2008 FACE LEVEL RIVERBOARDING CHAMPIONSHIPS
A season long competition series including Riverboarding Slalom, Boardercross, Extreme Downriver, & Freestyle Surfing
Riverboarding competition is here and it's going off all across the USA! From the season kickoff in So Cal to Championship weekend (someplace!) =), riverboarders are going to have the opportunity to test their skill, endurance, and mental fortitude against the best in the land! Oh, and did we mention some of these events will be on national TV?
SCHEDULE: Listed in detail below, Mid-April through the finale in September.
*Update - the First Thursday's events at the USNWC are not happening in 2008 because of insurance issues that popped up right before the first event. We have a couple potential suitors for 2009 but we hope to be able to have events at the Olympic Park next year as well. The USNWC is open though all 2008 for riverboarding on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 9am to 9pm.
RULES: The rules are listed in detail here at the United States Riverboarding Association's website (the US representative of RIPH, the international Hydrospeed / Riverboarding governing organization).
EVENTS: There will be 4 competitive events, with anywhere from just one to all 4 being at each competition locale.
SLALOM – riverboarders race downriver against the clock through gates, fastest time wins; times determine Boardercross seeding
BOARDERCROSS – head-to-head, full-contact downriver sprint race; heats and finals
EXTREME DOWNRIVER – a mass-start, long distance downriver endurance race
FREESTYLE SURFING – bodyboarding tricks in the river, surfing on a powerful river wave
PRIZES: Overall season points winner will earn a Riverboarding trip to Costa Rica in October and an invite to be part of Team FLI for 2009! Individual event winners will receive prizes from FaceLevel.com, Gath, SixSixOne, Numa Sport Optics, nuun Active Hydration, and GoPro Cameras.
POINTS: Each individual event is an opportunity to earn points in the standings. Points are listed in detail here.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: There need to be a minimum of 8 Riverboarders for races and 5 for surfing competitions.
ENTRY FEES: Some of the events will have entry fees of as much as $35 for non-ACA members. We encourage you to sign up for an ACA membership, it's $25 for the whole year and members can compete in certain events for free instead of paying an entry fee. All USNWC events will be $20. Note that the First Thursday events at the USNWC are only competitions, and will not be open Riverboarding sessions.
WANT TO HAVE YOUR OWN EVENT?: Additional events may be possible and count for prizes and in the standings if you can meet the course and competitor requirements, contact Ice for more details.

CAL-SALMON NORDHEIMER EXTREME DOWNRIVER - MAY 2-4
The Cal-Salmon race was an epic riverboarding adventure, some of the most fun whitewater that the trio of Ice, Docta P, and Kevin Yount had ever experienced. Since it was just the three of them there was no race, but the event was great and we're hoping to be a part of it in 2009, but with enough riverboarders to have a race! The river is incredible.

PRIMAL QUEST MONTANA 2008 - RUSH HD TV
Primal Quest's whitewater sections were crazy, and the riverboarding was the biggest, most intimidating stretch of whitewater ever used in an adventure race. Team NIKE scorched the course on their Mean Monkey sponsored "extreme boards", beating Ice's pre-race time trial by 10 minutes. They did have a lot more water, but still...they flew! NIKE easily had the fastest overall team time with 1 hour 10 minutes to cover the 9+ miles on riverboard.

GORE CANYON EXTREME DOWNRIVER - AUGUST 16th
Gore Canyon in Colorado is one of the most challenging stretches of whitewater that you'll ever riverboard. At an elevation around 9,000 feet, and with 4 miles of continuous Class IV / V whitewater, you'll be both mentally and physically challenged in a way you never have before.
The record for this race is sub-28 minutes, held by Aspen Seals guide Gary Pera. He's a competitor and will definitely be looking to defend his record on his home turf!
NOTE: You must run this stretch prior to the actual race. We will be riverboarding it a day or two before the race, so make it a point to be there to scout and learn the rapids.

GAULEYFEST 2008 - SEPTEMBER 19-21
GauleyFest is one of the most popular whitewater events in the world, and with good reason - big, fluffy whitewater, thousands of people, and great food and fun.
We're looking at this as kind of the "All-Star Weekend" to follow up to the season finale the week before in Charlotte. Come out and have some fun, and if you've been wanting to test your mettle on some bigger Class IV whitewater, this is the weekend to do it and to ride with some of the most experienced riverboarders around.
